Abstract
This study investigates the processing of kanji words while reading Japanese sentences in advanced Chinese learners of Japanese. In this experiment, we manipulated the orthographical and phonological similarities of kanji words between Chinese and Japanese as independent variables. Each high- and low-constraint sentence phrase was presented using the moving window method. Response times in lexical decision tasks for the target kanji words in red font was adopted as a dependent variable. As a result, the facilitatory tendency of orthographical similarities and the facilitatory effect of phonological similarity were observed in the high-constraint sentences case. However, an interaction between the orthographical and phonological similarities occurred in the low-constraint sentences case. Thus, these experimental results indicate that the functions of orthographical and phonological similarities between Chinese and Japanese languages are probably constrained by and depend on the context when Chinese learners process kanji word in Japanese sentences.
