Abstract
Fewer sexual expressions are used in Chinese media compared to Japanese media and the reason for this was explored from the perspectives of sexual attitudes and media regulation. The absence of the courtesan model in Chinese society was found to lead to the tendency of not talking about sexual expressions in public places. Compared with Japan, detailed sexual expressions in China may be considered “obscene” according to contemporary China’s laws and regulations. The punishment is also more severe. Under these social conditions, public use of sexual expressions is discouraged in Chinese mass media, which plays an important role as the Chinese government’s propaganda system.
