Abstract
While it is a well-known fact that Haruki Murakami’s literary works have gained global readership, the movies based on his works have not been so successful. This paper argues that director Chang-dong Lee’s 2018 movie “Burning” is a rare successful case. Then I claim that this movie that transcends eras, countries, and media as “World Literature”. Analyses are carried out both versions of “Burning”, the movie as well as the drama (95-minute shortened version) aired on NHK in December 2018. The drama version deepens the philosophy of Murakami’s works and incorporates the situation of South Korea as “World Literature”. The movie version challenges to surpass the original work. The purpose of this papers is to clarify the copious potential in each version of “Burning”.
