Abstract
Since Japan is part of the Sinographic cultural sphere, it has been strongly influenced by China since ancient times. The Chinese influence is pronounced in Japanese literature as well. While the Japanese employed “kanji” (Chinese characters) to develop their own unique “kokuji” (national characters), they also appropriated the form of “Chinese poetry” as a genre of literary expression. This resulted in Japan producing a wealth of Japanese “kanshi” (Chinese poetry). In this paper, I examine the so-called “Japanese kanshi” written by Japanese authors and provide an overview of its production in each time period. I also hope to examine kanshi that have taken the atomic bomb as their subject. In so doing, I hope to present an original “kanshi worldview” created by Japanese authors.
