Abstract
The present paper examines prajñāpāramitā studies at Bla brang Monastery, founded by ’Jam dbyangs bzhad pa ngag dbang brtson ’grus (1648–1721/22) in eastern Tibet, on the basis of the Bla brang dgon pa’i gdan rabs, Mdo smad chos ’byung, and other related materials. ’Jam dbyangs bzhad pa is the founder of Bla brang Monastery. He is also the writer of the monastic textbooks (yig cha) of the monastery. At the age of twenty-one to sixty-two, he studied at ’Bras spungs sgo mang Monastery in central Tibet. From the age of fifty-three to sixty-one, he composed the monastic textbook on prajñāpāramitā, Phar phyin gyi mtha’ dpyod, which has been used up to the present as a teaching manual for those studying the Abhisamayālaṁkāra and its related literature both at ’Bras spungs sgo mang and Bla brang. This paper thus highlights the monastic curriculum at Bla brang Monastery, the historical events surrounding ’Jam dbyangs bzhad pa’s composition of the Phar phyin gyi mtha’ dpyod, and commentarial works on the Phar phyin mtha’ dpyod written by later scholars.
