Abstract
The Dunhuang manuscript of “The scripture on the Ten Kings (佛说十王经)” in the collection of Kuboso Memorial Museum Arts, Izumi is an important record that preserves the early conditions pertaining to the belief in the ten kings. The author believes that the most important thing is that the writing instinct can see the specific information of the copyist. For example, this manuscript was written by a man named Dong Wenyuan in 971 to support himself and his wife when he was 68 years old. He then lived in the Pingkang Township ( 平康乡), Dunhuang and conducted his recording-related work in the Cao shi GuiYijun (曹氏归义军). He was a very godly Buddhist believer, who maintained a relationship with the Yong’an Temple(永安寺)and also worked as a painter in the Jishuyuan (伎术院). The manuscript was neatly written. The composition and positioning of the writing were carefully adjusted by folding papers; drawing errors were rectified and rewritten using another paper. At the end of the manuscript, the original text of the offering and his selfportraits were executed carefully. This manuscript is also important in that it echoes the lives of ordinary people during that time.
