This paper explores the existing preface to Xin Yuefu, and restores the Xin Yuefu to its original state at the time of composition by referring to several texts of Xin Yuefu extant in China and Japan. Based on these references, this paper reconsiders the longstanding and unsettled issues of the structure of the lyrics and whether they can be set to music in order to open up a new path for the study of ballads during the Tang dynasty.
