Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine closely the teacher’s role in enabling Japanese junior high school students to express themselves properly in specific situations and conditions through paying due attention to functions of language. More concretely, the author presents her lessons with a focus on the process by which discourses involving requests usually develop. Her principal proposals include identifying appropriate expressions according to the social relationship of the speakers, and presenting materials and dialogues taking into account the discourse structure and the sequence of functions. Her perspective considers the pedagogical implications of several research works applicable to classrooms in junior high schools, and provides examples of how their recommendations can be implemented. It is hoped that such research-based proposals will provide important insights designing courses of appropriate language use.
