This study is of a dual aim: (a) to explore the structure of Chinese-university-based Japanese language teachers’ reflection contents in three aspects:development needs, competencies, and professional identity, using the Onion Model; (b) to identify the professional development issue these teachers are facing. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 104 Japanese language teachers in Chinese universities. Factor analysis was then applied to analyze these teachers’ reflection contents in terms of development needs, competencies and professional identity. Onion Model was used to explore the difference in teachers’ reflection contents in these three aspects respectively. Results showed that the structure of teachers’ development needs and competencies were the same. On the other hand, the factor structure of the professional identity was different. Specifically, “reflective practice ability,” which means the integration and return of theoretical and practical knowledge, was not extracted as a factor of professional identity. Analysis of onion model suggested that the professional development issue may be hidden in their professional identity. This finding echoed arguments in previous studies that the training of Chinese university Japanese language instructors lacks the perspective of teacher education. These findings indicated that training and education activities for Japanese language teachers in Chinese universities should include the perspective of teacher education. This study also provided foundation for future studies to investigate what environmental factors affect teachers’ developmental issues.
