Abstract
In this paper, we report on a rural teacher education project run by the Equitable Education Fund in Thailand. We describe the project objectives, operation process, and selection criteria for a teacher education institution and the expected teaching and learning contents of the program. The contents include various activities related to the collaboration between teacher education institutions and rural schools and communities, which are essential factors identified in previous studies. However, the project has adopted a program type “conducted within rather than across silos”(Sleeter, 2014) that is different from other general teacher education programs. The project will mitigate the teacher shortage in rural schools in the short term. However, providing rural teacher education across the programs is imperative to bridge the long-standing gap between education for urban and rural areas. Moreover, the project seeks to educate multi-skilled teachers capable of teaching several grades, with non-specialized subjects, twenty-first century skills, and community development awareness. As a realistic option, it may be necessary to examine the qualities and abilities that teachers in remote areas require, and prioritize these in program design.
