Abstract
Kono Bairei was a painter who worked from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period. He is often appreciated as an educator because he devoted himself to the establishment of the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting, and trained painters such as Takeuchi Seiho, who would lead the next generation. Bairei's passion for educating beginner students is noteworthy. In this study, I examined what kind of principles Bairei followed and practiced while educating beginner students. Bairei insisted that the most important thing for beginner students was to learn the correct brush strokes; he had them study his own examples. In practice, it appears the same as the way it was done before the Edo period. However, it is hard to imagine that Bairei, who not only lived in an age when values were changing drastically but also devoted himself to creating new systems, would have applied the old methods as they were. What intentions did Bairei have behind placing so much importance on brush strokes and having his students learn from his examples? The tendency to emphasize brush strokes was not a method advocated or practiced only by Bairei; it had great force in the Meiji era. It was essential to learn how to use a brush not only as part of professional education for painters, but also for students in elementary and junior high schools. In order to understand why this policy was widely adopted, it is necessary to revisit drawing education in the pre-modern era, and consider the role that drawing has played since the modern era. This study aims to uncover clues that can help further knowledge on this topic.
