This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of using Social Networking Services (SNS) for learning German as a second language in Japan by examining the findings of some recent studies. The research indicates that although Line, Instagram, and Twitter are the three most popular social networks in Japan, Facebook seems to be the most suitable for L2 learning due to its various functions and options for interaction. The way that social networks are employed in foreign language teaching and learning will be described, and the potential benefits and problems relating to their use in pedagogical contexts will be considered. In relation to the benefits of using social media for L2 learning, the most often cited are their inherent authentic and habitual quality, their potential for enhancing learners’ motivation and autonomy, as well as the opportunity for improving learners’ L2 skills and developing (social) media literacy. Based on the research results from the studies, it will be argued that the informal use of social media seems to be the most promising regarding the achievement of L2 skills because it allows learners to use such networks in authentic ways. However, more research is needed in order to arrive at an understanding of how learners might be assisted best in their endeavour to utilise such technologies adequately and effectively in this regard.
