Music is critically important in dance, often determining the timing of dance movement. Contemporary dance is a new genre of dance, emerging in the 20th century. Freedom is a primary characteristic of this type of dance, in which dancers are not limited by a specific model of dance movement. Because dance movement involves freedom, it is common for dancers to rely on their own initiative, not on a model of traditional dance movement, and dance is sometimes performed without choreography. The current paper investigated the ways that contemporary dancers perceive music. In addition, we examined why contemporary dancers select particular movements, based on an analysis of actual movement and interviews. The analysis revealed that contemporary dancers commonly generate ideas for dance movement from lyrics, sound patterns, and unconscious processes. In addition, a high proportion of dance movement is synchronized with the timing of sound patterns, regardless of whether the dancer has generated an idea from lyrics or sound patterns. Dancers’ thought patterns can be divided into three types among dance movements that are synchronized with the timing of a sound pattern: 1. the dancer generates an idea from the lyrics of a piece of music, and the dance movement is synchronized with the sound pattern; 2. the dancer generates an idea from a sound pattern and the dance movement is synchronized with the sound pattern; 2. the dancer is not conscious of the origin of the movement, but the movement is synchronized with the sound pattern.
