The current study sought to clarify the definition of “imitation” in music education. Two concepts were focused on as targets of the analysis: “narau” and “utsusu”. Narau is primarily related to human behavior, involving the method and skill of production in the field of art. In contrast, utsusu refers to a state of imitation of an object itself. These concepts have recently been confused in music education. In the current study, this situation was regarded as an issue to be solved, based on a comparative approach using the theory of “mimesis” and Languages of Art written by Nelson Goodman. The results of this analysis revealed that utsusu corresponds to representation, which is an action related to the essence of objects, while narau is more closely related to imitation. In addition, terms such as “mane” (Japanese translation of “imitation”) and “mosho” (singing with imitation), which are used in the Course of Study (revised in 2017), appear to be ambiguous. Because it is unclear whether students should perform musical activities specializing in narau or utsusu, teachers must consider the criteria of activities according to the purpose of each lesson and the learning situations of their students.
