Abstract
This study aimed to examine the contents and learning methods related to creative activities in music textbooks for primary schools in Singapore. The descriptions of creative activities were extracted from the music textbook Perfect Match Music (2008, 2009), and the extracted information was analyzed. The findings were as follows. First, creative activities were involved in about 60% of all the units in that textbook. Creative activities related to singing, playing instruments, and listening played an important role in learning music. Second, creative activities were used as the means for learning musical content, such as musical elements and forms, rather than being directed at musical composition. As well as musical content, creative activities also provided a cross-cultural understanding with respect to world music. Third, creative activities were organized more systematically in higher grades. At the preliminary level, the focus was on learning musical rhythms using words and sound making. At the next level, the learning content developed in terms of making rhythm patterns or melodies and using the framework of musical forms, such as call and response.
