The purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of the music curriculum in A Conduct Curriculum for the Kindergarten and First Grade. This curriculum was established in the early 20th century when the U.S. kindergarten education was greatly changed. This curriculum had a significant influence on the kindergartens in those days. The characteristics of the music curriculum of the Conduct curriculum are as follows: 1. Setting a high value on children’s self-motivation, and structured in order to motivate children to take action for music activities by themselves; 2. Introduction of instrumental activities and music appreciation, which was a new initiative at that time; 3. Emphasizing to use materials which are based on children’s experiences; 4. Putting emphasis on developing children’s social skills through various music activities; 5. Emphasizing to develop children’s personality in music activities which fit their individual abilities. By investigating these characteristics, it became clear that the music curriculum of the Conduct Curriculum aimed to develop children’s individuality in acquiring social skills through several music activities.
