The prevalence of smoking among office and store workers in the Japanese food service industry was investigated. A questionnaire inquiring about smoking was distributed to participants (n=1111 : 358 food service office workers and 753 food service store workers). Results indicated that the smoking rate for workers in this industry was higher than the average for the Japanese population. Moreover, the smoking rate for store workers was higher than that for office workers. Multivariate logistic regression analyses indicated that the number of night shifts per month was associated with the high prevalence of smoking in both sexes. In men, 1-5 and 11-15 night shifts were associated with a high smoking prevalence (OR=1.62 and 2.49, respectively). In women, working 16 or more night shifts was associated with a high smoking prevalence (OR=3.87). It is concluded that decreasing the frequency of night work may be effective for ameliorating smoking among workers in the food service industry, especially in the case of store workers.
