According to the course of study at junior high school (Gakushū Shidou Youryō) published by the Ministry of Education in Japan in 1989 March, the division of present 「Woodworking 1」 and 「Woodworking 2」 is abolished, new 「Woodworking」 having the contents using woodworking hand tool with woodworking machine in the woodworking practice by joint operation of schoolboys and schoolgirls with 35 unit hours will start from 1993.

This questionnaire survey to teachers of industrial arts at 252 public junior high schools in Hiroshima was carried out for the purpose of clarifying the conditions of establishments of woodworking machines and their pupils' use in the 「Woodworking 2」 and the concepts about the teaching of wood machine work with practice in the new 「Woodworking」. The number of responses was 135 schools (53.6%).

The results obtained are summarized as follows:

1) Present 「Woodworking 2」 is done by 123 junior high schools (91.1%) and foldingchair is adopted as its subject of woodworking practice by majority of junior high schools.

2) Various kinds of woodworking machine (circular saw, hand feed planer, auto feedplaner, hollow chisel mortiser, drilling machine and fret saw machine) are set up by many junior high schools. The higher rate of pupils' use are hollow chisel mortiser and drilling machine as woodworking machine and portable power hand drill and portable power sander as power tools.

3) Although 82 junior high schools (60.7%) have equipments of tool-sharpening of woodworking machine, the tool-sharpening by teachers of industrial arts is done by 43 junior high schools (31.9%) for hollow chisel mortiser. Many teachers request carbide tool-sharpening of circular saw and knife-sharpening of both automatic feed planer and hand feed planer to the special manufactures concerned.

4) In the new 「Woodworking」, many teachers of industrial arts reply that the pupils' main tool use in the woodworking practice may be woodworking hand tool, and they entertain apprehensions that the relative weight of woodworking practice with woodworking machine will be lightened because of its insufficiency of time and so on. Furthermore, it is pointed out that the investigations of time of 「Woodworking」, method of teaching, and subject of woodworking practice will become the main subject for teachers of industrial arts.

5) The learning of technical skills of both tool-sharpening and tool-setting of woodworking machines is required in both college education and teacher education.
