Abstract
In this paper I dealt with two different functions of niyama (restriction) in the grammatical literature, viz. arthaniyama (restriction on meaning) and pratyayaniyama (restriction on affix). In this context, niyama means either "exclusion of A from non-A" (anyasmād vyāvṛttiḥ) or "exclusion of non-A" (anyasya vyāvṛttiḥ). It is to be noted here that "others" (non-A; anya) are confined to those which belong to the same class (tulyaitāīya) as an item in question (A).
