Some descriptive research has been conducted on kanji pronunciation based on several Buddhist texts left by Shinran. The present study, as part of a series of studies on kanji pronunciation in Shinran's texts, analyses the kanji in the Kyogyoshinsho text of the Higashi Hongan-ji Temple, which is said to have been written by Shinran in the Bunreki era (1234-35) and revised and expanded in his later years. Most of the kanji used in the Kyogyoshinsho text were pronounced in kan-on (漢音), one of the Chinese pronunciation systems adopted in Japan for the reading of Chinese classics.

From the analysis, the following characteristics of the kan-on used in the Kyogyoshinsho text have been found:

1. The newer accent of the Japanese kan-on has been adopted.

2. Changes of the accents have been influenced by the accents on the previous characters.

3. Hyoshokei (falling accents) and kyosho (rising accents) have appeared mostly on the head of the words.
