Abstract
The purpose of the present article is to study a kind of philosophy called "holism" on which second language education should be based, from the standpoint of Holistic Education advocated by Miller (1988). There are three philosophical premises posited up to the present to study: atomism, pragmatism and holism. Firstly, these philosophies and views of the world will be discussed from the standpoint of second language education, focussed on holism, and then the three kinds of educational view, that is, transmission, transaction and transformation, will be discussed m connection with these three philosophies. Lastly the "perennial philosophy" presented by A. Huxley in 1945 will be considered in pursuit of Holistic Education.
