Considerations on The first Attestation Bibliography of Meiji Era Kango : A Preliminary Examination of Korean Materials

The present study examines the connection between the magazines and newspapers of the Meiji Era and the first attestation bibliography of the title words (Kango only) of the Nihon Kokugo Daijiten (The Great Dictionary of the Japanese Language) that are also to be found in Chinmokhoi Hoibo (The Friendship Society Bulletin). Of the words picked up in the Foreign News Column of Chinmokhoi Hoibo that were examined, the words that could be verified in the Japanese original articles were compared with the Nihon Kokugo Daijiten. As a result, the number of words that have appeared in newspapers and magazines older than the sources quoted in the Nihon Kokugo Daijiten was found to be very large. Consequently, the detailed re-examination of the first attestation bibliography of an authoritative resource such as the Nihon Kokugo Daijiten becomes necessary. The present study is a hint in this direction.
