Abstract
Our music department has been provided with Asian musical instruments as Indonesian Gamelan ensemble, Indian sitar and Chinese er-hu, e.t.c.. Ethnomusicology classes are offered for the students who major in music education in semesters 3-6. In my class, I refer to the characteristics of scale, rhythm, and form of East Asian music. And besides, using these instruments, students can study not only music theory but also study performance skills of above nations. In Japan, world music is so popular that CDs and videos of musics of many cultures are available at the CD shop almost everywhere. But many of them are recorded in modernized style, it is more and more difficult to hear the traditonal styles in Asian music, especially in Chinese music. Actually, many CDs of Chinese music printed in Japan are recording the Japanese tunes performed by a various kind of Chinese instruments. I am afraid this means that Japanese people may not be able to distinguish the difference between the traditional music and non-traditional one. Under these conditions, in the course of music culture, how Asian music should to be taught? What issues are included, and how they can be solved? In recent years, I have made a point of teaching traditional style of Asian music in the ethonomusicology classes of which I take charge. In the near future, a concert or workshop of Asian music, which is organized or promoted by the authorities concernd, should be held inside and outside of the university for developping a life-long learning. Finally, I think that ethnomusicology must be interdisciplinary both in teaching and studying in order to be in position in the institutions of higher education.
