Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the recent trends and issues on the drive for thinness and eating behavior of adolescent females. In Japan, the number of eating disorders in adolescent female is rapidly increasing. And it is considered that the number of individuals who are not given a diagnosis of eating disorder but express a problematic eating behavior is on the increase. Through review researches, it was found that many psychological and sociocultural factors influenced the drive for thinness and problematic eating behavior. It was also found that self-esteem has the strongest influence on drive for thinness, and body dissatisfaction related to the drive for thinness directly. Other factors like perfectionism are also influence the drive for thinness. Regarding the eating behavior, three types of eating behaviors were found, and these behaviors did not work on the onset of eating independently but they interacted with each other. Finally, it was suggested that there is the lack of psychological intervention for eating problems and food education, and further research is necessary to solve these issues in this area.
