Abstract |
The purpose of this paper is to examine the rural inhabitant's consciousness to the landscape issues and the conservation problem in two farming villages in the Austrian Alps. The author discussed on the characteristics of the landscape conservation in Tyrol (Okahashi, 1995). In that paper, he referred to the importance of rural inhabitant's consciousness to the surrounding landscape. Therefore this paper intends to clarify this subjective aspect by employing the method of questionnaire survey. The results obtained were as follows. 1) It was clarified that the inhabitants were satisfied with their present life in the villages and gave an affirmative evaluation about the village life in general. 2) It was revealed that there were common trends in inhabitants' evaluation and preference on the settlement and housing landscape, regardless of the old and new comers. The fundamental dimension of their preference was based on the traditional mode of Tyrol. 3) It was guessed that such landscape consideration was partly strengthened by their daily leisure activities such as hiking, taking a walk and gardening, most of which were conducted in the surrounding rural space. 4) Gemeinde, an administrative and conventional unit has survived as a substantive community, playing an important role in the daily life of villagers. The author thought that this also gave some common features to the landscape consciousness. 5) Dorferneuerung, the most influential program for landscape conservation, was introduced to Tyrolian villages in recent years. It turned out that some inhabitants had a negative view to Dorferneuerung project, though the greater part of inhabitants affirmatively caught this one. It was thought that the main cause of their complaint derived from the biased project to the technical spheres, which did not necessarily correspond to the fundamental regional problems to be solved.
