Abstract
The purpose of this paper is twofold: to explore semantic differences between use and utilize employing one of the large-scale corpora available, WordbanksOnline, and to describe the co-occurrence relations between the two verbs. Since use is the most common verb expressing "doing something with something for a particular purpose," it can be used in various situations and with many different kinds of nouns indicating tools and manner or frequency adverbs, while utilize is a more formal verb than use and is preferred when mentioning technologies, skills, methods, resources and so on, and implying that the act is performed in an effective and efficient way, which is often embodied with manner adverbs or expressions signifying a comparison with others.
