This report is a summary of the 50th Anniversary Symposium, held online through Zoom on January 18th, 2022. The theme of the year was “Challenges of higher education and expectations for higher education research”.
In 2018, the Central Council for Education reported on the "Grand Design of Higher Education for 2040". In the report, expectations for the university were stated in these terms: "in the midst of drastic social changes on a global scale, universities will be the basis for supporting and promoting the future development of society through the fulfillment of the original functions of education and research".
From the same perspective, the Center for Higher Education Research and Development conducted a fact-finding survey on higher education in Japan and made policy recommendations. Subsequently, in May 2022, as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our founding, the Center for Higher Education and Research set a future-oriented theme for higher education and research in order to take a positive step as we look toward the 100th anniversary of our founding.
At this symposium, experts who have contributed to the development of higher education research critically analyzed the issues surrounding higher education and expectations for higher education research, in order to reconsider and reaffirm the themes that higher education research should tackle in the coming years. Mr. Tetsuo Goda (Deputy Director, Cabinet Office [Secretariat for Promotion of Science and Technology]) gave a lecture on the theme of "Modern Issues in Higher Education and the Role of the Government". Mr. Mutsuhiro Arinobu (President of Eikei University) gave a lecture on the theme of "Contemporary issues of higher education and industryacademia collaboration". Mr. Reiko Yamada (Professor of Doshisha University) gave a lecture on the theme of "Contemporary issues of higher education and expectations for higher education research". Finally, Mr. Masayuki Kobayashi (Professor, Obirin University) commented on those lectures.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the speakers and to all the symposium participants who enthusiastically engaged in the discussion.
