Abstract
How people select words to call each other can be a kind of index to show the relationship between them.Especially, in the situation of Japan and Korea, when people conduct conversations, they have to pay much atten-tion to the word selection. Both Japanese and Korean are similar in the following points:Firstly, when calling each other, Japanese and Korean people greatly concern in selection of the address terms, which are reflected by the relationship of social stratification. Secondly, kinship terms are frequently extended fromthe family circle to non kinship. What has been mentioned above can be defined as a general rule in both Japanese and Korean language. However some exceptions and differences are found in the actual situation. The purpose of this study is to clarify the usage and characteristics of address terms, based on the result of ques-tionnaire answered by Japanese speakers and Korean speakers in February, 2000.
