Abstract
Giso of Fukuyama established in 1804 by the investment of private citizens such as Shubee Kawai was aimed at giving the poor rice as well as various social work in a year of a natural disaster. A purpose of this article is to introduce relief activity for a seven times that Giso performed. By the first relief carried out in 1823, they distributed rice of 140.4t to the poor in Fukuyama territory. However, they were not able to realize 360t that were an original aim. The second one was carried out in 1836, and they distributed rice of 45t to the poor in possessing it. And with this, they started special accounts for poor relief in the next year and prepared for a disaster of afterward. They gave the poor rice of 45t afterwards in 1849. They gave rice of 22.7t afterward in 1850, and they distributed rice of 95.4t possessing it for the fifth next in 1853. The sixth one gave the poor rice of 59.4t in 1861. And, in 1869, they did rice paid as a tax of 100silver kan(貫) for a help of poor relief in Fukuyama feudal clan. These relief rice was served in farm rent of Giso field as a principle, but purchased land tax rice and rice of other countries when they were short. And these relief rice was very effective for the poor.
