Abstract
This article examines various opinions about the object of illusory cognitions. In the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, the examples of the object of illusory cognitions are used to indicate that various things appear as if they are external objects. In the Madhyamakāvatāra, the examples of reflection (pratibimba) in a mirror and so on are used to illustrate the causal relationship between empty things. By this examination, this article clarifies various theories about objects of illusory cognitions.
The Dbu ma chen mo analyzes various opinions about objects of illusory cognitions. According to this analysis, the Prāsaṅgika, the Vaibhāṣika and so on assert that reflection in a mirror and the mind (citta) are distinct. On the other hand, the Yogācāra asserts that these are not distinct. The Prāsaṅgika accepts the opinion about reflection in a mirror which the Vaibhāṣika accepts too.
