Abstract
This paper consists of a translation of chapter 5 (only the latter half) of Jayantabhaṭṭa's Nyāyamañjarī, where Jayantabhaṭṭa argues about sentence-meaning(vākyārtha).

Jayantabhaṭṭa discusses various kinds of sentence-meaning in the chapter. But the main purpose of this article is to clarify his criticism of the views that pratibhā is sentence-meaning. The view can be rejected, Jayantabhaṭṭa maintains, by refuting the view that sentence-meaning is knowledge which appears as on unification of word-meanings(saṃsarganirbhāsajñāna ).

The following is the synopsis of the portion of the text translated in this paper :

0. Introduction : Different views on sentence-meaning.

1. Sentence-meaning is not somethig external(bāhya) but knowledge(jñāna)

2. Jayanta's refutation : Sentence-meaning is something external.

3. Sentence-meaning is an action(kriyā). [Grammarian's view]
