Abstract
SYNOPSIS (3)

1.3.1.5. [Difficulty] The nominal base vā 'sky' should not be called dhātu. If the term dhātu is assigned to div 'gamble' by virtue of its being recited in the dhātupāṭha, then one has to deny the name to the nominal base vā which is homonymous with the verbal root vā listed in the dhātupāṭha. Otherwise nominal affixes would not be allowed to occur after vā 'sky.'

[Difficulty finally unremoved] Solution is given: The procedure of the Teacher in his making the rule P7. 1. 84 gives us the clue that the nominal base vā can take the nominal affixes even if it has homonymity with vā listed in the dhātupāṭha.

This solution is rejected: At the stage {akṣa-div+sU} in derving akṣadyūḥ 'dicer' ("one who gambles at dice") [nom. pl.], one cannot avoid by any means the applicability of the rule P7. 1. 84 without prohibiting over-application of the term dhātu to vā homonymous with that which is recited in the dhātupāṭha. Here in the base akṣa-div, the div is formed by adding the kṛt affix KvIP to the verbal root div.
