Dazai Shundai is regarded as one of the most distinguished disciples of Ogyu Sorai. He, as contrast to Hattori Nankaku, who succeeded to Sorai's linguistic and literary studies, inherited political philosophy. His learning, therefore, is considered as reducing to one facet of Sorai-Gaku polyhedron (or extracting one segment of it). Looking from another perspective, however, his learning, although its scale being smaller than Jinsai's or Sorai's, radically presents one issue germinating in the overall Kogaku school study. The subject is how to argue on relations between an individual and a communal society without including each individual's internal principles at all.
