Abstract
Sueo Kanemaki (1899‒1983) played an important role in children’s dance education from the Taisho to the Showa periods. In 1917, he started dancing and had established his own dance study group in 1919. In 1931, he studied abroad in Germany with Mary Wigman. After that, he made eff orts to make children’s dance education more proactive and produced several dance works and his own theory of children’s dance. He especially built on rhythmic education. This study aimed to examine the genealogy of Kanemaki’s philosophy for children’s dance education, focusing on the purpose and teaching materials for dance education. The main resources for this study were Kanemaki’s books, School Dance (1924), Gakko Yugi Furitsuke no Riron to Jissai (1931), Gakko Buyo Riron yori Sosaku e (1933) and Gakko Buyo Sosaku no Riron to Jissai (1949), which were selected because Kanemaki wrote in detail about children’s dance education. Two main findings were obtained: i.e., Kanemaki placed importance on fun activities for children to facilitate their self-expression; in addition, Kanemaki was influenced by the trend of the education, including the Arts Education Movement, the Nursery Rhymes Movement, and rhythmics. He actively incorporated these practices and his theory could be checked accordingly.
