Abstract
The article examines the contents and results of training and educating the Royal Navy’s engineer officers in the Nineteenth Century. Generally, ship’s engineers which mean naval engineer officers and marine engineers in the mercantile marine were ‘non-elite’ engineers in the Nineteenth Century. Their socio-cultural conditions resembled these of skilled labours. Since the 1840s, however, the Royal Navy’s reforms and the movements by some naval architects which handle a series of technological changes affected the Royal Navy’s engineer officers. Those reforms and movements created a modern training and educating system of the Royal Navy in the 1860-70s. Utilizing it, engineer officers can acquire highly skills and knowledge, and newly consisted of men had middle-class backgrounds. Those factors distinguished engineer officers from skilled labours. In addition, engineer officers came to occupy many important posts in not only the Royal Navy, but also shipping, shipbuilding and marine engineering industries.
