The Fourth Online Survey of Students' Perceptions of Peace on the 78th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Preliminary Results

This paper reports on the results of the 2023 Online Survey of Students' Perceptions of Peace, conducted jointly by the Center for Peace, Hiroshima University and the Yomiuri Shimbun, and makes some preliminary observations on changes in students' attitudes towards nuclear weapons over the past three years. In particular, the study examines the impact of the protracted Russo-Ukrainian war on students' views of peace in light of the dichotomous concepts of 'ideal' and 'reality' regarding the existence of nuclear weapons. Students' expectations for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons decreased, and they tended to focus more on reducing nuclear weapons. At the same time, students' expectations of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) increased, and the number of responses supporting Japan's signing and ratification of the treaty and its participation as observers increased.
