Abstract
This paper takes the establishment of the Baohuanghui(保皇会)in Honolulu as a case study to explore the interactive relationship between Liang Qichao(梁啓超), a political exile from the late Qing dynasty, overseas Chinese(華僑), and the local society. The survival environment of overseas Chinese shaped their political awareness, prompting them to pay attention to the political situation in China and welcome the arrival of political exiles.
When attempting to establish their own political organization, the various parties exhibited different reactions based on their stances. The Qing government's officials made strenuous efforts to obstruct, while the conservative factions attempted to distance themselves from political conflicts. The local Caucasian community held contrasting attitudes towards this political organization, yet both sides of the opposition were rooted in the same Anglo-American ideological framework. In conclusion, through this case study, we are able to observe the intricate social environment of overseas Chinese and its significance in world history.
