Abstract
In recent years, the perception of music as a form of human communication has spread to various music-related research fields. Research based on this perception is flourishing in the UK. Among these, “Communicative Musicality” proposed by Malloch and Trevarthen (2009) in particular has significantly attracted Japanese music education researchers’ attention and has been referred to in their research extensively. This paper aims to summarize these research trends in the UK and identify the challenges and prospects for this research in Japan. Consequently, in addition to quantitative research based on “Communicative Musicality,” models such as the “Reciprocal Feedback Model of Musical communication” by Hargreaves et al. (2005) as an analytical framework for qualitative research can be utilized for research development in Japan.
