Development of a “Death Education” Learning Program to Foster Self-Control: Aimed at second grade elementary school students

We developed a “death education” learning program using teaching materials dealing with death-related content from a second grade elementary school moral education textbook. In this article, we provide suggestions for solving the problem of bullying among second grade elementary school students through making them aware of the fear of death and grief and that there are things they should not do, and developing self-control. A three-hour “death education” learning program combining a lesson on death, a lesson on compassion, and a lesson on self-control was conducted at K Elementary School, the practice school, and a lesson on self-control was conducted at M Elementary School, the control school. Through the analysis of worksheets after the class on self-control, we clarified the differences in the children’s consideration of self-control and examined whether the “Death Education” learning program was linked to the development of a perspective that leads to the control of aggressive behavior. The results revealed the following two points. First, the “Death Education” learning program, which consisted of a lesson on death, a lesson on compassion, and a moral lesson on internal self-control, may lead to the development of a desire to make decisions according to one’s own conscience, even if it is not in one’s own interest. Second, through the “Death Education” learning program, students could think of specific ways to calm themselves down. In the future, we aim to further improve the structure of the program to foster self-control by using different teaching materials and changing the order of the lessons.
