Abstract
The aim of this paper is to clarify the difference of expressions in daily greetings between in Japanese and in modern Greek, in the contrastive analysis of expressions used in daily greetings in these two languages.

The greetings here can approximately be divided into two groups: the one which is concerned with (used in the restraint of) the time of a day or the seasons and the other which is not.

In this analysis, I mainly observed the expressions belonging to the former group. The expressions, which seem to be pragmatically used in the same way in the two languages, are used differently in some cases. For example, "Ohayo gozaimasu" in Japanese is used in the morning, but "Καλησπέρα" in modern Greek is used in the morning and in the early afternoon. And "Καλησπέρα" is used in the late afternoon and in the evening. "Akemashite omedeto gozaimasu" is used in the former days of January and never used in december, but "Καλήχρονιά" is used in the most days of december and in the most days of January, etc...

The difference is caused by the characteristics of structural ellipsis and the two nations' habits and cultural backgrounds. We can observe, therefore, the cultural characteristics displayed in those greetings.
