Psychological factors related to self-expressions and expectations of others' expressions in university students' friendship

An earlier study investigating factors related to junior and senior high school students' self-expressions and expectations of others' expressions showed that "considerations of others' feelings" was negatively related to "expressions of complaints / demands" (Shibahashi, 2004). The present study investigated factors related to university students' self-expressions and expectations of others' expressions. University students (N=269) completed questionnaires. The results of multiple regression analysis showed the following: (1) "considerations of others' feelings" was negatively related to "expressions of opinion", "expressions of complaints / demands" and "refusals of friends' request"; (2) "feelings of secure with friends" was related positively to all subscales of self-expressions among women; (3) "considerations of others' feelings" and "positive senses toward frankness" were positively related to "expectations of complaints / warnings from others" among men, while "desires to control" was negatively related to "expectations of complaints / warnings from others" among women. These results show that psychological factors related to university students' self-expressions and expectations of others' expressions are different from junior and senior high school students' and there are sex differences.
