Interrelation between Husband and Wife Reflected in Timing of Activities

Generally we use the duration of activities in time-budget studies. This paper examines the interrelation between husband and wife reflected in timing of activities, not in the duration. Do husband and wife conduct the same activity at the same time? What activities are conducted by a husband when his wife is engaging in the specific activity? I conducted the time-budget survey in 1995 at Higashi Hiroshima City. 160 couples were selected and time use data on Friday and Saturday was reported. The information about husband, wife and their household was also collected. 24 hours are divided into 96 points of timing every fifteen minutes. The degree of the coincidence of the activities of husband and wife at the same timing point is affected by the employment status of the wife and the day off pattern of the couples. In Japan, husbands sleep longer than wives. We cannot find such a result in other counties. Japanese wives get up earlier than husbands and prepare breakfast during husbands still sleep. When husbands conduct housework, wives are likely to conduct housework. On Saturday, husband and wife conduct free time activities more at the same time when the husband does not work. Gender difference between husband and wife in terms of the duration of activities were cleared up from the new points of view by the analysis of timing.
