A review of empirical studies on jealousy

Bers & Rodin's (1984) classified jealousy into two types, that is, social-relations jealousy and social-comparison jealousy. This article proposed the definitions of the two types of jealousy.

There were a lot of empirical studies on romantic jealousy, so romantic jealousy was considered as a representative example of social-relations jealousy. The results of research on romantic jealousy were reviewed in the following areas: 1) the components and structure of romantic jealousy, 2) the factors determining the intensity of it, 3) the psychological processes mediating it, and 4) the effects of it. It was pointed out that there were few empirical studies in social-comparison jealousy. Finally, future research orientations of social-comparison jealousy were suggested.
