Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to make a survey on emotional development of children with autism, putting emphasis on attachment behavior, affect comprehension and expression, and empathic ability. It is suggested that disturbances in the development of attachment behavior of infants with autism are resulted from the lack of basic behaviors such as emotional reoponse and turn-taking, which are observed even among the newly born infants, and proposed that this lack may be related with deficits in both affective and cognitive abilities in adolescents and adults with autism. It is also pointed out that future investigation on emotional development in autism should be longitudinal and conducted in relation to other domains of mental ability.
