| Abstract |
While carrying out the deconstruction of the Wangdao (王道) system of Mencius (孟子), which weakens a king's political power, the Lizhi (礼治) system of Xunxi (荀子) worked to make the king's power absolute. This system was the most effective means of maintaining control in the expanding urban communities. It was also the only method for the people to accustom themselves to living as a member of the urban communities, which were considered the body of the emperor. Therefore, by [proffering a] system that would make a king's power absolute, Xunxi was using strategic discourse to gain an established identity by convincing a king to put his Lizhi system into practice.
