Abstract
The book, 'pao-p'u-tzu' (抱朴子), written by Kê-hung early in the 4th century is separated into the front part (前編) and the latter part (後編). One tells us how to be a Shén-xian (神仙), and the other tells us sbout the advantages and disadvantages of social life chiefly. This article shows the first step on studying Kê-hung's thought which consolidates both parts of his book.

Author, taking Kê-hung's thoughts about hermits out of the latter, tried to catch the originality which supported his thought and also thought of the relations between Kê-hung and his era.

Hermits held a oreed to live in the world which reversed general values. What Kê-hung admired them for living in the world of hermits means that he was a defeatist toward the actual phases of human life, in which he had to change the standard of value fundamentally in order to recover his conscience of defeatism, and he believed it was one best way for avoiding the crisis of social organization to live as a hermit. This article consists of two points in the above statement.
