Abstract |
Our symposium theme was "The Various Phases of 'Nation' Images in the Modern Society". In the recent studies of the modern chinese history, there have been also several theses about political and social process of founding the nation state. However from the view point of democratic developments in modern china, the 'nation' images have not analized satisfactorily.
Therefore, I chose Luo long-qi (羅隆基 ; 1898-1965), who was a very famous western-educated political scientist. He studied under Harold Laski at the London School of Economics in 1926-27, received a Ph. D. degree at Columbia University in 1928, and returned to China in 1928. As a liberalist, he kept away form Communism, and criticized Guomindang's one party rule storongly. In my thesis, my emphasis is on the next three points; (1) the nature of Luo long-qi's 'Nation' image, (2) Luo's formation of 'Nation' (3) the historical meaning of his 'Nation' image. |
