Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to describe go-on (呉音), a Japanese variant of a system of Chinese pronunciation, used in early 13th-century Japan. The original texts used in this study are the Amida-kyo and the Kanmuryoju-kyo. These texts were transcribed around 1200 by Shinran (1173-1262), who is regarded as one of the greatest men of religion in Japan. The kana and accent marks added beside the kanji in the texts indicate the kanji pronunciation used at the beginning of the 13th century. These kana and accent marks show that most of the kanji used in the texts was pronounced in go-on.
Based on the kanji index to the Bussetsu Amida-kyo and the Kanmuryoju-kyo (already published in three parts in the Bulletin of Hijiyama Women's Junior College 27 (1992) -29 (1993)), the present writer has made a detailed description of the kanji pronunciation in these two Buddhist scriptures. |
