Abstract
It is not easy for teachers to keep all students motivated and concentrated through a term, or sometimes even through a lesson. Almost all students learn German for the first time at university, and they learn German eagerly at first. But as learning advances, some students have difficulties, especially in grammar. For example, when a Japanese child learns German in a German kindergarten, the child is probably very motivated because German is used as a tool for communication. In addition to motivation, time to learn in such a situation is unlimited and each children can learn at his or her own pace. But in the case of learning German in a secondary school or at a university, students (and teachers) have only limited time and there are certain contents which students are required to digest during each lesson. In such a case, it is important that students participate actively. This paper explains about the concept of "language learning games" in foreign language classes, and introduces four games that were practiced in a German class for beginners in the second semester of 2005. In addition, the opinions of the students with respect to the games were surveyed. Results of the questionnaire show that language learning games are popular with students, and are useful for learning in the following points: a) to review what they learned, b) to notice points that they did not understand, and c) to automize what they learned The games involve cooperation and teamwork. They require communicative exchanges, and students had opportunities to teach each other. These cooperative exchanges also promote comradeship and trust among students. Thus, language learning games provide multiple benefits.
