Abstract |
In this paper, the author studies suppositional expressions in the Central area synchronically and diachronically, and gives some consideration to the trend of their change through the distribution of various forms. The dialect materials used in the research are divided into three groups: (1) the dialect maps based upon the fieldwork in the Central area, March through October, 1976 ; (2) the dialect maps based upon the fieldwork in Aichi Prefecture, 1966 through 1968; (3) the record of spontaneous conversation collected through fieldwork throughout Japan, 1963 through 1976. The results : (1) the characteristic suppositional expressions in the Central area are roughly classified into A, B, and others. A: darāzu, darā, jarā, yarā, zura, ra. B: darō, jarō, yarō, rō. Others : bē, deshō, etc. The description of the usage of those forms is given in the paper. (2) The forms in Class A are distributed on the fringes of Japan, and are interpreted to be older than those in Class B. (3) The distribution of zura which is one of the characteristic forms in the Central area dialects generally tends to disappear. dardzu, darazu, dazu, and darasu are also disappearing. It could be said that the use of zu is generally avoided. (4) darā~dara persists in the Tokai area, and is creeping eastward in Aichi Prefecture partly displacing zura. m is, on the other hand, creeping westward from the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture into Aichi Prefecture. (5) The distribution of the simple form ro is disrupted at the Jōetsu area. It is a clear indication of the decline of the form.
